Zinc oxide: a multiple-use mineral powder
Posted on September 10 2020
Zinc oxide is an odorless inorganic mineral that has been used for several centuries, especially in cosmetics. In addition to its multiple applications, zinc is also an essential nutrient for the human body.
It presents itself as a white, opaque powder with many properties. It is used as a coloring agent to whiten preparations, but it also has a sun protective role, which makes it a popular ingredient in summer products such as sunscreens.
According to research presented in Amsterdam on April 15, 2019 by the ECCMID ( European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases ), zinc oxide is an effective compound when it comes to counteracting foot odor, as it is capable of absorbing excess sweat, creating an adverse environment for odor-causing bacteria, as well as reducing excessive perspiration by naturally closing the pores of the skin. Therefore, this component can be found in deodorants specialized in combating and eliminating excess sweat and foot odor. At Herbalera, we use it in our day cream, Lavender & Borage soap, Ho wood & Hemp soap, as well as in combination with diatomaceous earth and arrowroot starch in our deodorants.
The antibacterial, cleansing, anti-inflammatory, soothing and deodorant properties of zinc oxide make it an excellent asset for poorly ventilated areas such as armpits, feet or even babies' bottoms.
The most important thing is to choose a high quality zinc oxide and guaranteed free from nano-particles. These micro-particles, very volatile, can be inhaled and cause many health issues according to some studies. The zinc oxides which contain these micro-particles are lighter and less opaque.
